Definition of Sustainability

The theoretical framework for sustainable development evolved since 1972 through a series of international and UN conferences and initiatives. From the initial perspective of environmental protection towards the inclusion of o the social and economic dimensions of sustainable development, conservation and management of natural resources, the role of major groups, and means of implementation.

Defining and implementing sustainable development has had to deal with the tensions between the three pillars, and the prevailing “influences” at different points in time.

      Growing population
      Poverty
      equality
      Environmental degradation
      Democracy, human rights and peace
      Development

A dynamic balance among many factors, including the social, cultural and economic requirements of humankind and the imperative need to safeguard the natural environment of which humanity is a part. Green economy that promotes employment, sustainable management of natural resources, environmental protection and human development.
